About the job
Like Google's own ambitions, the work of a Software Engineer (SWE) goes way beyond just Search. SWE Managers have not only the technical expertise to take on and provide technical leadership to major projects, but also manage a team of engineers. You not only optimize your own code but make sure engineers are able to optimize theirs. As a SWE Manager you manage your project goals, contribute to product strategy and help develop your team. SWE teams work all across the company, in areas such as information retrieval, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking, security, data compression, user interface design; the list goes on and is growing every day. Operating with scale and speed, our exceptional software engineers are just getting started -- and as a manager, you guide the way.
Image Relevance is the foundation of Image Search. We build the core algorithms to understand both the user intent and information from every image on the web. The goal is to provide the most relevant images that enable meaningful actions for our users.
In recent years, we have developed several production ML models to serve various needs in the image ranking stack. Working closely with Research and web ranking teams, we develop and deploy latest techniques from ML/NLP/CV fields for the image relevance task.
There are opportunities to improve the retrieval and filtering of results. The team will leverage a variety of features and approaches to optimize the space of results explored for a given user query.
This role will collaborate with the team in Mountain View.
In Google Search, we're reimagining what it means to search for information - any way and anywhere. To do that, we need to solve complex engineering challenges and expand our infrastructure, while maintaining a universally accessible and useful experience that people around the world rely on. In joining the Search team, you'll have an opportunity to make an impact on billions of people globally.
Responsibilities
- Train and develop new generations of ML models for image retrieval and ranking.
- Employ learned models in interesting new ways to maximize ROI of results scored.
- Develop the team and guide junior members in developing capability, intuition, and prioritization.
- Analyze search queries, identify failure cases, propose new ideas, and validate those through experiment iterations.
- Understand and improve the end-to-end development and serving flow on ML model in search.
